The Iron River National Fish Hatchery is situated on 1,200 acres of the picturesque headwaters of Schacte Creek with several miles of maintained trails for public use including bird-watching, hiking, hunting, snowshoeing and skiing. The hatchery maintains 6,000 lake and coaster brook trout adults that produce millions of eggs. Two million trout are produced annually for distribution in Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron and their tributaries. The hatchery holds an open house in late summer and volunteer opportunities abound during fall spawning. Self guided tours are available from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year, and staff guided tours can be arranged.
